FutureThink was created to help the hospital community think outside existing paradigms to create long-term solutions to workforce shortages and to meet and exceed the needs of our patients.

Ohio faces serious health care challenges: an aging population and a growing shortage of nurses. Without intervention now to improve the work environment for nurses, change the way care is delivered and help people stay well, the health care delivery system will struggle to provide high quality and safe health care to Ohioans.

The Ohio Hospital Association and Ohio Organization of Nurse Executives teamed up in 2002 to launch FutureThink as a unified effort to create a future where:

  • The state of Ohio recognizes health is more than the absence of illness.

  • All Ohioans have access to care and can achieve their optimal being.

  • Ohioans are informed, motivated and personally accountable to actively participate in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, just as health care providers are accountable to Ohioans.

  • The health care workforce is inspired and educated to be part of a care delivery model that promotes collaboration, respects the contributions of different caregivers and utilizes integrative technology.

  • This model attracts bright, diverse and talented individuals to serve our population.

The FutureThink vision for the year 2013 is that an effective health care delivery system harnesses technology and maximizes collaboration among health care team members to provide the best care for patients and make workforce woes a thing of the past.
